One of Carbon Neutral Expedition’s key objectives is to raise awareness of climate change among school children across the UK and Jersey.
.
The education initiative was launched in 2007. Since then numerous schools nation wide have been visited, with over 90 interactive classes and assemblies. Well over 6,000 pupils have been directly involved to date. Tens of thousands of pupils had interactive access to the Greeland expedition as CNE associated with 40 schools nation wide. CNE became part of a Jersey wide educational programme in partnership with Eco-Active and Jersey states of education.
.
Climate change is part of the Key Stages of the National Curriculum. CNE has formed the basis of school projects nation wide and has brought the reality of expeditions to the classroom.
What happens when CNE comes to your school?
CNE can design specific programmes to fit with your school’s routine. A typical day might involve them taking assemblies, classes or small “Green Team” discussions. They will use a mixture of video clips and slides broken up with entertaining group work and practicle sessions. They present their previous arctic and experiences and future expeditions, discussing Arctic survival, climate change and the research they have undertaken. The children can try on Arctic clothing, eat expedition food and take part in team building exercises including tyre dragging and putting up tents blindfolded!
.
Partner schools will be asked to show their commitment to reducing their environmental impacts by pledging to reduce their own carbon footprints through a 40 day Carbon Fast. This facilitates lifestyle changes (promoting cycling to school or switching to low energy lightbulbs for example.) Schools are running fundraising initiatives to invest in offset projects through Carbon Neutral Expeditions’ offset partner For Ethiopia. This fits in with the objectives in the government’s Sustainable Schools initiative.
.
We were proud to witness one school hauling the way recently. Where 15 grade nine pupils pulled tires a staggering 96km in one day around their school, raising both money and awareness of sustainable travel!
.
Carbon Neutral Expeditions are looking to give as many schools as possible the chance to participate in further expeditions.
.

Raoul and Rich proved themselves to be naturals as Education speakers. They spoke about the Arctic with authority, enthusiasm and passion. They were inspirational and genuinely interested in spreading the Education message about the Global Warming issue with young people.”
“Their work in Greenland with their carbon neutral expedition fits in perfectly with the curriculum work we are doing in GCSE Geography as part of the QCA / OCR Pilot GCSE course.”
“ I haven’t seen him ever be that attentive in class in over 6 years of teaching him!” Le Rocquier School, Jersey.
“The expedition team is absolutely focused on bringing learning alive in the classroom. This is a unique opportunity for students to actively engage in a project that is meaningful and relevant to young people today and to future generations of learners. Their active engagement in the expedition will really deepen their understanding of the environment and our impact on it. Oasis Academy Bristol wishes the team every success in the forthcoming expedition.” Oasis Academy Bristol.
“Just wanted to say thanks for a really interesting talk today, it made a change from some of the recent talks which have been all politics and business related which, although interesting can get a bit repetitive
and dull!! It was particularly interesting to hear about the environmental stance on the expedition and although it adds an extra level of difficulty I believe that with your passion you will make it a huge success, I admire you for taking that challenge and I hope that others will follow in your footsteps.” Godolphin and Latymer School, London.
“The children were absolutely fascinated. The carbon neutral focus sent a clear message to the children, and staff. As a car free school we were keen to learn how we can do more to support the environment.”
“ The children were keen to find out more about the environmental impact of the trip and in class discussions afterwards many decided to investigate more into this.“
“The sessions were fantastic and have left a lasting impression on many.” St Mary Magdalene Academy, London.
